I’m trying to be better about DNF-ing books. I’ve always been the WORST at DNFing because I feel so bad, but now I realize that I don’t want to waste my life reading ‘meh’ books when I could be reading a super great one. I’ve actually DNF’d four books in the past month, which is like, more than I ever have in my entire life!! I saw someone say they had a rule that if the book doesn’t pick up in the first 100 pages, they’d DNF it- it’s a rule that I’ve been going by and it’s obviously working (a little too well, I guess)!
Here’s a list of the books I’ve DNF’d recently:
-The Fever King
This was available for free on Kindle and I’d seen it all over twitter. But I didn’t feel invested enough to continue past 100 pages. The premise seemed interesting but the beginning was too slow for me.
-Girls of Paper and Fire
I listened to probably around a quarter of this on audiobook in the midst of the biggest audiobook slump I’ve ever experienced. The slump might’ve contributed to my disappointment with this, but I also didn’t really like the direction the book was headed, and I’ve seen a lot of reviews say that it gets really dark at times.
-And I Darken
I was SO SAD about this one. I picked up the ebook right after I finished The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein (which I LOOOVED) and was just…so disappointed. It was super slow and I wasn’t as interested in Lada as I was with Elizabeth.
-Certain Dark Things
Another audiobook amidst slump. I added this to my TBR because I’d seen Victoria Schwab recommend it a few times, and even though it’s about VAMPIRES-WHICH I AM OBSESSED WITH- I gave up on it. Maybe I’ll try it again someday on ebook.
A couple of these were very, very hyped up, so maybe the fact that I wasn’t immediately blown away by them is just because of how much I was hearing about them.. but nevertheless, I’ve been struggling to get through books recently. Hopefully I can find a great one soon!
Have you read any of these? Should I give any of these another chance? I’d love to hear your sales pitch about these books haha! 😉 Also if anyone has any other DNF rules they follow, I wanna know (especially for audiobooks)!
