We Hunt the Flame
Author Hafsah Faizal
Publisher Farrar, Straus & Giroux | 2019
Zafira is the Hunter, disguising herself as a man when she braves the cursed forest of the Arz to feed her people. Nasir is the Prince of Death, assassinating those foolish enough to defy his autocratic father, the king. If Zafira was exposed as a girl, all of her achievements would be rejected; if Nasir displayed his compassion, his father would punish him in the most brutal of ways.
Both are legends in the kingdom of Arawiya—but neither wants to be.
War is brewing, and the Arz sweeps closer with each passing day, engulfing the land in shadow. When Zafira embarks on a quest to uncover a lost artifact that can restore magic to her suffering world and stop the Arz, Nasir is sent by the king on a similar mission: retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter. But an ancient evil stirs as their journey unfolds—and the prize they seek may pose a threat greater than either can imagine. (from Goodreads)

OH MY GOD. I WISH THIS DIDN’T SIT ON MY BOOKSHELF FOR WEEKS SO I COULD’VE SCREAMED ABOUT IT SOONER. I loooooooved this!!! I read a few chapters of this last week and was like, wow I think I’m really gonna like this, and then I went away for the weekend, came back and read the rest in a few hours. IT WAS SO GOOD. I was HYPED the entire time and once Zafira and Nasir met, I was losing my mindddddd. Ugh. I literally want to re-read the whole thing again right now but I’m gonna BE STRONG. Get ready for a whooooole lotta caps lock.
“We hunt the flame, the light in the darkness, the good this world deserves… You remind me that hope is not lost.”
(First off, I couldn’t even find the brainspace to flag more than one quote because I was too busy having the frickin’ TIME OF MY LIFE.) There was SO MUCH to love about this. The book started off a teeeeeeeny-bit slow for me, but it picked up quickly and never let up. I absolutely loved both Zafira and Nasir and you know I LOVE A DUAL POV ROMANCE LIKE YESSSSSSS PLEASE AND THANK YOU!!! I mean, look at this tweet from the author about the tropes in this:
Let’s take a moment to break this down, why don’t we-

MUTUAL PINING. Oh, the mutual pining!!

Then cap it all off with some frickin’ SWORD TO THROAT action. It’s a miracle I even survived this book tbh.
So OBVIOUSLY, I’m obsessed with this book. (Plus, the cover is GORGEOUS so bonus!) The characters were great (I also really adored Yasmine!!) and I loved everyone’s relationships. Though the magic and worldbuilding aspects confused me a little at times, I still thoroughly enjoyed this. I am already counting down the days until the sequel (I mean, DUH after that ending) and I am absolutely about to scour the internet for some WHTF fanfiction. GOD THIS WAS GREAT!
