Top Books of 2019!

Hello and a happy 2020! I just closed a show at work on Sunday and since I have some time off, I thought it was finally time for me to shift my attention back to my blog! I’ve talked about it in probably every post I’ve posted in the last 5 months, but my blogging motivation and inspiration left me in the second half of 2019. I’ve found spurts of inspiration every couple of months, but nothing has stayed constant and one of my goals of the new year is to dedicate time to blogging, which I still really love! I’m hoping that this time off will allow me to get more organized and have more time to write and post reviews.

To start the year, I figured it was as good time as any to reflect on 2019. I ended up reading 111 books, my best ever! Though the past few months have been slow on the blogging end, I spent a lot of that time building my bookstagram, which reached 1300 followers last week! I worked more than ever last year, made a couple new friends, took my first solo travel trip, and of course, started this blog! Today is officially my 1 year anniversary of Kayl’s All Booked! 😀

I’m excited to see what 2020 will bring. My reading goal is 100 this year and I’m aiming to spend more time writing and interacting with other bloggers as well! I’m currently staring down two solid months of not working, which is a bit terrifying but I also know it’s something that I will really benefit from. I have a feeling that a lot could change for me in the next couple of months and I’m curious to see what will happen!

For now, I wanted to make sure to share my Top 7 Books of 2019 (because 7 remains the most powerfully magical number)! I’m really happy with the list I ended up with because these books were scattered perfectly throughout the year and I love them all so much! Luckily, past-me actually wrote reviews for all of these books (a pretty good indication that these were all so great that I needed to talk about them endlessly), so I’ve linked them here as well! 🙂

SORCERY OF THORNS by Margaret Rogerson

I usually can never pick an absolute favorite of the year but I think this one might take the cake. I ADORED this book. I also read An Enchantment of Ravens this year and liked it, but this one was amazing. Rogerson is now an auto-buy author for me! The characters were all perfect and I loved the worldbuilding details. I’m already dying to re-read this one, but I’m gonna be strong and wait until the end of the year.

NINTH HOUSE by Leigh Bardugo

If you read my review, you’ll know that I struggled initially getting into this one, and I was a bit worried because I LOVE Leigh Bardugo and I was really anticipating this one. Luckily, it quickly turned around and frickin’ ENRAPTURED me. I was enthralled with the plot and the characters and the magic and the setting. The ending was absolutely phenomenal and I was a ball of nerves and anxiety and happiness as I flipped over the last page. I’m SO glad I stuck with it and I should’ve never doubted Leigh. SO GOOD. Absolutely cannot wait for book two.

WE HUNT THE FLAME by Hafsah Faizal

I went into this book with little to no expectations and I was BLOWN. AWAY. I was so taken by Zafira and Nasir (and Altair!) and Y’ALL KNOW I LOVE A DUAL POV ROMANCE!!! I could not put it down once it got going and I was super pleased with all of the relationships and friendships. Counting down the days until I get to re-read this in anticipation of the sequel in July!

THE DARK DESCENT OF ELIZABETH FRANKENSTEIN by Kiersten White

efrankenstein

I’m seeing a theme throughout these books of badass women leads and I am NOT COMPLAINING. This book was no exception and Elizabeth Lavenza had me shook. I didn’t know the original story of Frankenstein prior to reading, but I really loved the spin that White took with the classic story. I was really into all of the characters and since horror is not a genre I read often, it really stayed with me throughout the year!

ILLUMINAE by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman

Major shout out to bookstagram, without whom I would have never read this book! I got a recommendation for this audiobook on Instagram one day and honestly I am so thankful because it’s now my all-time favorite audiobook! It completely changed the way I thought about audiobooks and what an incredible experience it can be with a full cast. I’ve since gotten a physical copy of this, and though I’m excited to someday experience the visually graphic nature of the paperback, I think I’ll have to listen along to the audiobook as well because it’s just an absolutely incredible production. If you haven’t listened to the audio, I cannot recommend it enough. THANK YOU CHELSEA!!!

A CURSE SO DARK AND LONELY by Brigid Kemmerer

csdal

I’m obsessed with fairytale retellings and this one was no different (also happy book birthday to A HEART SO FIERCE AND BROKEN!!!). It has so many different things that I love in a book. DUAL POV ROMANCE YEAH plus I loved the spin it took on the original and the side characters were great. I finished this and preceded to read Brigid’s entire works and I loved them all. She’s one of my favorite authors now and I can’t wait to read AHSFAB!

THE WINTER OF THE WITCH by Katherine Arden

This book was actually one of the first books I read last year and it was so amazing that it stuck with me through the entire year and ended up on this list! It was absolutely everything I could’ve asked for in a series finale. I love this series SO MUCH and Vasya is one of my absolute favorite characters. I’ve already made it a goal to re-read this series at the end of the year because I cannot wait to dive back into this world. Every single detail of this book is amazing and I can’t express in words how much I love it. What a beautiful, beautiful series.

I had a lot of fun writing this! It was funny to go back and read some of these reviews that I wrote at the beginning of the year, haha. I’m super excited to discover all of my favorites of 2020! I actually made a TBR this month, so expect reviews to come soon! Also, I’ll finally be posting my Deathly Hallows + HP re-read wrap ups! I didn’t want to rush through those so I decided to save them for the new year. It’s been HARD narrowing down my top 7 chapters, OK?!?! Hopefully those should be up next week 🙂
