In a time when Shadowhunters are barely winning the fight against the forces of darkness, one battle will change the course of history forever. Welcome to the Infernal Devices trilogy, a stunning and dangerous prequel to the New York Times bestselling Mortal Instruments series.
The year is 1878. Tessa Gray descends into London’s dark supernatural underworld in search of her missing brother. She soon discovers that her only allies are the demon-slaying Shadowhunters—including Will and Jem, the mysterious boys she is attracted to. Soon they find themselves up against the Pandemonium Club, a secret organization of vampires, demons, warlocks, and humans. Equipped with a magical army of unstoppable clockwork creatures, the Club is out to rule the British Empire, and only Tessa and her allies can stop them… (from Goodreads)
This review is spoiler-freeeeeee! 🙂
I have officially, finally read my first Cassandra Clare book! Woohoo! I admit that I never really had the slightest interest in the Shadowhunter series, so I never picked up The Mortal Instruments (and honestly probably still won’t). But I kept getting The Infernal Devices trilogy recommended to me and I figured it was less of a commitment to try out a trilogy than however many books TMI has. So I picked up a copy of Clockwork Angel at Half Price Books aaaand…
I LOVED IT! Honestly, the beginning started out a bit slow for me which is one of the reasons why I bumped this down to four stars, but once Tessa arrived at the Institute it picked up and I was hooked! The second half is filled with plot twists and action so it was pretty easy to breeze through the ending. I really liked Tessa and her powers were so cool! The Shadowhunter world is fascinating and a bit overwhelming at times, but I guess it serves me right for skipping over TMI. Still, I was able to enjoy myself a lot!
I LOVE JEM. SO MUCH. It helps that my cat is also named Jem so I immediately took a liking to him because he has such a good name haha. But he’s actually AMAZING and must be protected at all costs. It frightens me that he’s my clear favorite because he seems to be in the most danger of being hurt or dying so fingers crossed! I’ve somehow managed to completely avoid spoilers for this series (though now that I’m actually aware of this fact I feel like I’m in constant danger of spoiling myself accidentally) so I have no idea what might happen. But the second Jem rescued that cat he solidified a place in my heart. CATS ARE MY WEAKNESS OK. If a character has a cat I immediately like them a million times more.
Another factor that bumped this down from a 5-star was the romance. Slight spoilers here if you haven’t read this book: I liked Will, and he obviously has a weird backstory that I don’t know about which makes him act a certain way, but he comes off as a bit mean at times. I also DON’T like the fact that I can feel the love triangle being set up because it’s pretty obvious to me that Will would be the winner and Jem would get hurt which I am NOT a fan of. (LOL watch me be completely wrong and none of this happens woop) But I’m really over love triangles (who isn’t?) and I actually can’t remember the last series I read that had a real one? So I’ve managed to avoid them for awhile. But this one just seems obvious to me. Maybe the fact that it’s SO obvious means it’s not what I’m thinking? *shrug* Don’t know, but I’m gonna find out!
I’ll definitely be continuing on with this series! I’ve seen reviews that it’s the best series out of the …three?? I’m not versed in all the different series so I really have no idea which are which. I’m not even sure if I can read The Dark Artifices series without having read TMI. Not even sure where that series takes place in the timeline of everything… That was confusing. But whatever, I’ll figure it out!
