The Shadows Between Us
Author Tricia Levenseller
Publisher Fiewel & Friends | 2020
Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:
1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.
No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.
But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen? (from Goodreads)
This review is spoiler-freeeee! 🙂
“Once, there was another boy who made me feel this way. One who made me feel full and seen and loved. Now the bugs of the earth have feasted on his flesh.”
UGH I LOVED THIS ONE. I read the first few chapters and knew I liked it immediately. I mean– can we talk about a FIRST LINE?! Noiceeeee. I’ve been seeing this described as a “Slytherin romance” and I was HERE FOR IT. Slytherin pride! Then some vacation stuff got in the way and I wasn’t able to read, but on my last official day of vacay I completely breezed through the rest of the book and had SO much fun!
“I’ve done passion before. That’s what it was with Hektor. It didn’t go over well. Passion doesn’t lead anywhere good. It turned me into a murderess.”
This plot is almost tailor-made for me. It reminds me a lot of The Wrath and the Dawn, which is one of my all time faves. Kinda-sorta enemies to lovers through royal marriage SIGN ME UP!!! I liked Alessandra a lot. She was super cool and scheme-y and I loved watching her work her manipulative magic with the court and the Shadow King. Honestly, just give me girls scheming anyday. I LOVE A SCHEME. Speaking of the Shadow King, obviously I loved their relationship a lot! I really liked the way they interacted and how they seemed to bring out the best in each other. There were some fun surprises and I LOVED (loooooooved) the way the whole reveal about Hektor situation was handled at the end– I thought it was refreshing and amazing and incredible. Even just thinking about it now made me really happy because it was just SO GOOD. WE LOVE A SUPPORTIVE RELATIONSHIP PARTNER.
“‘Alessandra Stathos, that’s positively despicable.’ He says the words like they’re the highest compliment he can give me.”
The story was thrilling- it never really seemed to slow down and then once you got towards the end it was full speed ahead. Impossible to put down. At one point I told my dad we had to wait to order dinner because I had like ten pages left and I was STRESSED. There were a couple semi-predictable plot points but overall I was pretty surprised by everything that happened! I would say that the ending was a tad bit rushed but it’s just because I wanted so much more time with these characters! I wish there was a sequel because I would definitely pick it up! I’m already gearing up to read the rest of Levenseller’s books, I loved this so much! Definitely one of my favorites of the year so far 🙂
